Gidue proudly pioneers the Digital Flexo technology

Nowadays, in the constantly demanding labels and packaging market, where customers persistently ask for the best quality, efficiency and profitability, Gidue has introduced a visionary concept for the flexographic printing: the Digital Flexo technology.

Everything started in 2005, when Gidue first industrialized the Print Tutor model, applied first to the mid-web and offset multi-process machines and then (March 2010) to the flexographic ones. From that starting point, the evolution went on with the Digital Flexo technology, introduced for the first time in September 2011, at the Label Expo Bruxelles. On that occasion, Gidue proposed a new vision for the labels and packaging industry, made of flexographic presses with fully automated print pressure and lateral and cross register. For the first time, in the narrow-web flexo industry, the press automatically runs the printing process, substituting the operator (also of the less technically skilled one) hands and eyes: HD digital cameras (Print Tutor™) set on each printing unit “read” and manage the print pressure, the colour density and the image register, servo-adjusting them, in order to achieve superior printing outcomes.

With the introduction of the Digital Flexo, the machine ensures higher printing quality and significant waste reduction (less than 20 meters for the 8 colours set up), since everything is digitalized; this allows the press operator to better focus on achieving the best outcomes, also during operational production phases (such as speed and roll changes).

Thus, a Digital Flexo press is also able to avoid mistakes in file management. With this absolutely innovative expertise, Gidue reconfirms its technological leadership in the flexographic scenario. Digital Flexo is the future for flexographic printing in the label and packaging industry, especially in terms of waste and production time reduction, providing incomparable and unprecedented quality standards.

Booklet labels for single-service fresh food prepacks: A fruitful solution

The label on perishable food pre-packs may be extremely transient but, despite its short life, it is still required to perform the key roles of providing both decoration for retail shelf ‘stand out’, as well as a considerable amount of product data. Achieving these twin goals can be challenging on small containers - but Harmony Fruit and Yoghurt Desserts, developed by leading quality Swiss bakery and foods manufacturers Jowa AG for major Swiss retail chain Migros, certainly prove that it can be done.

The challenge
Harmony Fruit and Yoghurt Desserts are premium-quality, single-service fresh products, with a shelf life of just four days, packed in clear lidded PET pyramidical containers. They are offered in combinations featuring four fresh fruits – apricot, pineapple, strawberry and raspberry - and provide a delicious and healthy end to a meal. On the retail shelf, for such products, the consumer needs to be able to view the contents; to verify – via the label – the flavour offered; and read all the associated data - nutritional information, ingredients, weight, and sell-by date, etc. Space, however, is limited on the small, unusually-shaped Harmony containers.

A creative answer
Jowa’s Head of Packaging Development, Christian Pfeiffer, knew he needed a special labelling solution, and challenged specialist label printer Pago AG to deliver the answer. Pago is a regular label print partner of Jowa, and has a particular expertise in the production of self-adhesive leaflet/booklet labels. Says Fredy Schöb, Pago sales manager: ‘Our long experience with complex label shapes combined with booklet content really helped us to develop a label for the Harmony desserts that delivered all the content elements our client required and, at the same time, looked attractive and clearly identified the flavour in the pot. As a bonus, because the label also seals the pack lid - it additionally performs a valuable overt tamper-evident function.’

Using a 60 micron gloss white self-adhesive PP film as the base carrier for the FSC paper booklet, Pago prints the labels – incorporating three double-sided pages -- by rotary letterpress in six colours using low-migration inks, providing a double-perforated tear-off section as part of the construction.Label content is printed in three languages – French, German, and Italian. With the needs of plastics recycling in mind, the self-adhesive label laminate also features a removable adhesive. Printed in typical runs of 50,000 labels per flavour, the Harmony labels are hand-applied by Jowa staff as an integral part of their production and packaging process.

‘Real food appeal’
Christian Pfeiffer of Jowa is delighted with the end result. ‘The labels have real food appeal’, he says, ‘and for the consumer it’s easy to choose the preferred flavour, thanks to the colourful picture of the different fruits. We chose Pago to print them because it has a very good development department, and first-class printing equipment.’

Award-winning labels
The sets of labels for Harmony Fruit and Yoghurt Desserts were also recently recognised by Finat, the European self-adhesive label industry association, in their annual Label Awards competition, where Pago was this year awarded the top prize in the marketing and end-use category for booklet labels. Kurt Walker, President of FINAT, comments: ‘Accommodating the increasing raft of textual content required by law on a food label has meant that label printers today need to be ever more creative. Pago has ably demonstrated that self-adhesive booklet labels can represent an attractive and practical solution.’

Finat, founded in Paris in 1958, with headquarters in The Hague (The Netherlands), is the worldwide association for manufacturers of self-adhesive labels and related products and services. With 600 members in over 50 countries around the world, Finat has much to offer to label converters and all suppliers to the labeling industry in terms of information exchange and the opportunity to network internationally.

Labelexpo India is South Asia’s largest label, product decoration, package printing and converting industry expo...

In a run up to the  Labelexpo India show happening at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from October 29th to November 1st,  we at Labels India are bringing to you a series of interviews with various personalities. In the start up to this series, we have brought to you a first hand account of what converters can expect to see at the show by none other than Roger Pellow, the MD of Tarsus - the organisers of Labelexpo India. Here is a short tete..
Labels India: How pleased were you with your last Labelexpo India showing? What are your expectations this year?
Roger Pellow: Labelexpo India 2010 was a fantastic success with 150 exhibitors and 6,054 visitors in attendance - a figure that was up by 27% from the show in 2008. We’re hoping to surpass that this year with over 200 local and international companies exhibiting and a target of 7,000 visitors. As with all of the other recent Labelexpo events – Europe, Asia and Americas - we’re seeing record breaking attendances and many new suppliers signing up for the first time as exhibitors in new territories.

Labels India: How is this show different from the others?
Roger Pellow: Labelexpo India 2012 is different from other trade shows for several reasons. Firstly this is a fast growing market sector in a fast moving economy. Secondly, the show is interactive for show visitors as they buy and network.
The event is all about the show floor and allowing visitors to get close up to the newest machinery, ancillaries, inks and substrates. With over 20 live working presses being demonstrated at the show by companies including Gallus and Mimaki, attendees are strongly placed to make well- informed choices. Being able to see firsthand the many features these presses offer such as quick change over time, rapid tension control and resulting print quality will be invaluable when it comes to those show visitors making purchasing decisions.
Also the support of the LMAI, AIFMP, Delhi Printers’ Association and HOMAI really underlines how the show is the country’s main opportunity to showcase the latest in state of the art printing technology while keeping Indian printers abreast of changing trends – both at a local and global level.

Labels India: With more than 200 exhibitors this year, how has this show grown over the years?
Roger Pellow: Since we purchased the show in 2007, Labelexpo India has fast become South Asia’s largest label, product decoration, package printing and converting industry expo. Starting with a little over 5,000 visitors, the show has gained momentum each year and now with the sixth edition set to take place it will be the largest show in its 10 year history.

Labels India: Apart from established market leaders, there are many first time exhibitors. Comment.
Roger Pellow: As with our other Labelexpo events we are experiencing an influx of new exhibitors. Following Labelexpo Asia 2011 a number of Chinese manufacturers started to look at opportunities outside of the domestic Chinese market and take space at our other international shows. For Labelexpo India 2012, we have new exhibitors from all over the world including China, the Middle East and Brazil. New exhibitors include: Anoop Plastic, Color-Dec, Fujifilm Sericol, Heraeus Amba, Jung Chang Machinery, Mastercorp, Mimaki, Rheintacho, Taghleef Industries and Webtech.

Labels India: More products, more launches and more live demonstrations is the theme this year.
Roger Pellow: As ever, Labelexpo India 2012 is the place to see the latest product launches and technology in action. Time spent at the show needs to be maximized, so it is vital that printers use the opportunity to compare the various printing presses and technologies that are being demonstrated. With all the key suppliers under one roof, Labelexpo India offers unparalleled access not only to the equipment, but to experts who will be able to advise on how individual printers can improve their own efficiency and margins.

Labels India: What new products, technologies and services, are on display at Labelexpo India?
Roger Pellow: There will be a number of press launches including new machines from Durst, EFI Jetrion, Mimaki, Monotech, Nuova Gidue, Omet, Primera and Webtech. Lots of new materials are also being showcased for the first time including new inks from Fujifilm Sericol, adhesives from Jesons, foils from Univacco and tamper evident security labels from Weldon Celloplast

Labels India: How will this show help Label and package printers looking to diversify and add value to their operations?
Roger Pellow: Attending the show will enable converters to see a wide selection of technologies in action. It will also allow them to examine and understand how presses can be configured with different processes such as embossing, over-laminating, foiling and how effective inspection systems can be. More importantly, show visitors will be able to see machines that are capable of printing on other materials and converters should not ignore how they can diversify their business beyond the label by easily moving into package printing e.g. folding cartons and flexible packaging.

Labels India: And finally, how do you feel Labelexpo India is positioned going forward?
Roger Pellow: As one of world’s most vibrant and exciting market places, the future is very bright for Labelexpo India. As the show continues to grow in size and footfall, visitors can be assured that they will continue to see the latest innovations in label and package printing under one roof. As with our other Labelexpo events which are held in other parts of the world, the shows are designed to remain central and key to ensuring the printer stays in control of their business and profit margins.

Kumar Labels to launch the NB-332 rotary die-cutting machine under the brand HassleFree Technologies at Labelexpo India

Kumar Labels will be launching the NB-332 rotary die-cutting machine under the brand HassleFree Technologies at their stall D7 at Labelexpo India 2012. With the launch of this label converting machine, Kumar Labels is all geared to step into the domain of equipment manufacturers.

When asked, how did this transition from a printer to an equipment manufacturer come about, Anuj Bhargava said: “As a printer we were often faced with the challenge to keep our operations flexible, cost effective, yet standardised to achieve consistent quality with minimum work-force. While flat-bed die machines offer a good solution for short to medium runs due to low investment in cutting dies, they require skilled operators and longer set-up times.
