Hybrid Software schedules orders at Belgium Label Printer

When the printing capacity at Accent Etiketten outstripped the ability of the company’s production scheduling software, the Belgium label printer called on the services of Hybrid Software. The solution came in the form of a customised production scheduling tool within the industry-leading workflow software CloudFlow.

“We operate HP Indigo digital presses and flexo presses,” says Christophe Beke, quality assurance and project manager. “We had originally written our own software for scheduling jobs, which operated within the ERP environment and had performed quite adequately. However, recent investment in our press department meant that the workload demands had overtaken what our package could handle and we estimated that to rewrite it would have taken us more than a year.

“Instead, we started examining what was available on the market and when we looked at the products from Hybrid Software we were immediately interested in the company’s potential to meet our needs. We liaised closely with its specialist team of developers in order to tailor its existing production scheduling tool to our particular requirements and this cooperation enabled us to reach our current position.”

The family run business specialises in supplying self-adhesive labels to customers throughout Belgium, France and Holland. It employs more than 60 people and operates HP Indigo 6600 and 8800 digital presses as well as eight and ten-colour flexo presses. These are in use around the clock five days a week and in addition to scheduling their workloads Accent Etiketten wanted to include its cutting and packaging facilities.

Bert Van der Perre is Sales Manager Benelux at HYBRID Software and has been heavily involved in the project. “In the new environment, job information is sent from Accent Etiketten’s MIS system directly into CloudFlow using XML files,” he says. “We set up a device manager within CloudFlow to define the relevant details of each machine, providing parameters that include minimum run time, setup time, production speed, number of print stations, time to change rolls and cleanup time. The solution incorporates an ‘availability calendar’ that takes into account factors such as staff holidays, maintenance, potential for extra shifts etc.

“Based on the technical details of a job and its due date as described in the XML, CloudFlow checks the machine’s availability and assigns the job to the press or equipment as well as providing a given time slot. As with all of our CloudFlow-based solutions, what we have created for Accent Etiketten is available as an HTML5 web interface, so this is readily accessible to other companies,” says Bert Van der Perre.

The advantages to Accent Etiketten have been numerous, with optimised scheduling of orders leading to improvements to delivery times and greater productivity. The company is a leading label printer in Belgium and during Labelexpo Europe 2017 HP Indigo presented Accent Etiketten with its award ‘Fastest Growth Champion in Northern Europe’.

Christophe Beke picks up the story. “All of our pre-press operators use Hybrid Software’s Packz editing software, so we already had a connection with the supplier,” he says. “Being able to liaise directly with its software engineers on this new project was excellent as this meant we benefited from extremely fast replies and solutions.

“We implemented the Hybrid Software package in two phases and have been using it with our digital presses and cutting equipment for about four months. The set up of our flexo presses is more complex so we left this for phase two, which started a few weeks ago. The training and installation have all gone well and we’ve achieved great transparency of the delivery process throughout the organisation. This new scheduling tool helps us to remain at the forefront of technology and can be utilised with any future investment made in the pressroom,” says Mr Beke.

At LabelExpo Asia, AVT to showcase Asia debut of 100% Inspection System for Digital Printers

For the first time at LabelExpo Asia, AVT will demonstrate Helios D (digital), a high-end 100% automatic inspection system specifically designed to address digital printing challenges such as missing nozzles, ink drips and color uniformity – all in real time. AVT, the world leader in print inspection, print process control, and quality assurance solutions, will be located at Stand B18 during the show, which occurs December 5-8 in Shanghai.

Helios D works seamlessly on any application and substrate, including label stock, transparent film and even highly-reflective foil. Helios D automatically identifies defects like missing nozzles, spots, damages and color changes as soon as they occur. The result is reduced waste, enhanced production performance and comprehensive monitoring.

AVT also will show automation and workflow systems for traditional flexo printing amounting to start-to-finish print inspection and quality control solutions. For example, AVT’s well-regarded Offline Setup reduces inspection’s “human factor” through quality standardization and shortens setup time, resulting in reduced waste and streamlined setup workflows – all under the same global quality standards.

Then, AVT’s signature Helios solution provides 100% print inspection, helping ensure that all outgoing materials are within specification for customer satisfaction. Helios is trusted by printers worldwide, even in sectors where exemplary print quality is required to meet consumer safety regulations – such as the pharmaceutical and food industries.

For reporting purposes, AVT’s PrintFlow Manager ensures that production data collected from all platforms is presented directly to overseers. Production managers can monitor, analyze and control production quality right from their desktops.

The entire process is tied together by AVT’s Workflow Link, which serves as a bridge from press to rewinder, increasing line efficiency and productivity while stopping only for designated defects. Slitter rewinders can run at top speeds and, by selecting the extraction of only critical defects, rewinder stops can be reduced by up to 50%.

Finally, AVT also will showcase Offline Proofing for scenarios where in-line inspection isn’t feasible. For example, SolidProof ensures that no critical errors have been overlooked in the print production process, while SoftProof inspects artwork and digital files with pixel precision, detecting missing text and graphics, incorrect fonts and text size, broken type and color deviations. CloudProof is a collaborative, web-based upstream application that reduces approval cycles by sharing inspection projects.

According to Yair Shaharabany, President of Asia Pacific at AVT: "LabelExpo Asia provides an unrivaled opportunity to display our inspection and quality control solutions to many of the world’s fastest-growing print markets. We look forward to demonstrating our unsurpassed systems for both digital and flexo printing, which are utilized by customers around the world to ensure quality, reduce waste and streamline overall production efforts."

Amjet Shanghai extends Esko Partnership with First CDI Crystal 5080 XPS in Greater China

Leading Chinese flexo platemaker Amjet Shanghai, a division of Amjet Group, has again partnered with Esko to install the first CDI Crystal 5080 XPS system in Greater China. The investment in world-class platemaking process technology includes the latest Automation Engine prepress workflow as well as the latest screening technology for flexo printing. It will enable Amjet Shanghai to focus on the highest definition flexo production technology for flexible packaging and labels.

With the new solution, Amjet Shanghai, a repeated winner of the FTA Award in the United States, aims to combine greater prepress workflow and the highest quality screening technology to improve efficiency and to enhance the quality of its packaging and printing.

Precise Crystal control
The new and unique CDI Crystal XPS is a digitally-controlled exposure unit supporting all photopolymer flexo plates. The combined solution reduces five manual steps in the traditional platemaking process to just one step. The platemaking device integrates with the entire prepress workflow, including Device Manager, to optimally control the output of plates.

Plates are placed onto the glass surface, where very accurate back and main exposures - by patented LED UV light technology that allows very precise control - are conducted simultaneously. The consistent light source and nearly concurrent back and main exposure deliver unmatched relief and image consistency combined with perfectly formed flat-top dots. As a result, these plates deliver the highest level of consistency and quality on press.

One of the primary factors influencing plate stability is UV exposure. It has also been proven that the shorter the time (dwell) between main exposure and back exposure, the finer the detail, such as highlight dots, tiny linework, and text, can be held on the plate. The CDI Crystal XPS completes these exposures nearly simultaneously, providing the absolute highest quality dot and fine elements.

Automation Engine manages Flexo Platemaking
Automation Engine enables a fully-automated platemaking workflow, from ripped files all the way to the exposed plate on the CDI Crystal XPS, without operator intervention. With Device Manager, anyone that needs to know what the status of a job is, can check from the comfort of their desks. Jobs can quickly and easily be placed in queues, and queues can be modified as needed. This automation not only saves valuable operator time, but also time in the platemaking process to help meet customer customer demand.

Geert de Proost, Director Solutions Marketing for Esko, states, “With our new flexo platemaking solutions, we ensure that flexo printing maintains its prominent position and is ready for the business challenges of label and flexo converters today.”

The CDI Crystal and XPS Crystal UV exposure unit was unveiled by Esko at Drupa 2016. EyeC to exhibit fastest print inspection technology at the Labelexpo Asia 2017

EyeC China and EyeC GmbH, the German expert for print inspection systems, will present its high-speed print inspection systems at the Labelexpo Asia 2017 in Shanghai from December 5 to 8, 2017. The company’s inspection systems support the most modern processes and ensure the print quality throughout the entire production process.

At Stand B35 in Hall E1 EyeC will demonstrate together with the rewinder manufacturer Onemech the EyeC ProofRunner Label. The solution delivers 100% print inspection, even on the fastest presses or rewinders on the market, running at speeds of up to 600 meters per minute (2000 fpm).

The company also offers the EyeC Quality Link, which enables the inspection results from the press to be evaluated at a separate station and used later on the rewinder to remove all defective labels. The benefits are clear: The press operator can react more quickly to avoid expensive material waste, while rewinders can run more efficiently by avoiding unnecessary stops.

Moreover, EyeC will show its pre-press proofing software the EyeC Proofiler Graphic and its off-line inspection system the EyeC ProofBook. The latter checks the print quality of multi-page samples such as booklets, leaflets, catalogues, or user guides.

Exhibition visitors who would like to know more about the benefits of efficient quality control can see EyeC’s inspection systems in action at Labelexpo Asia that includes  100% print inspection for printing or finishing with the ProofRunner Label, Integration and Optimization of inspection process with the EyeC Quality Link and Fast and secure off-line testing of multi-page samples with the EyeC ProofBook.

Founded in 2002 in Hamburg, Germany, EyeC is the market’s only supplier to ensure the product quality throughout the entire printing process – from the first artwork file to the finished product. The product portfolio includes file-to-file comparison for artwork revision control and prepress applications, as well as print-to-file inspection systems for press sample testing and 100% print quality control of products such as folding cartons, labels, leaflets, or flexible packaging. The market’s most intelligent algorithms ensure that the systems show only relevant defects.

With EyeC products, users avoid recalls, keep production costs and material waste in check and optimize their quality control. Worldwide, there are over 1,600 EyeC inspection systems in use by pharmaceutical companies, printers, and branded good manufacturers. The company currently has 56 employees in Hamburg and has international sales partners in more than 20 countries.

Flexo Concepts Building 100% Solar-Powered

Flexo Concepts announced that it has completed the installation of a solar renewable energy system. The system “went live” on October 17, and the building occupied by the company is now 100% powered by solar-generated electricity.

Last fall, company owners Kevin McLaughlin and Greg Howell hired Hopkinton-based Solect Energy to do a solar feasibility study for the multi-use commercial property housing Flexo Concepts and several tenants. The study confirmed the economic viability of the project, and Solect began work on the development, design, engineering, construction and interconnection of a solar energy system.

Installation, which included 850 panels on the roof, 40 power inverters and all materials required to connect the energy to the building and electric grid, was completed over a 5-month period. The system generates 290kW of power – equivalent to the electricity used by about 30 average-sized homes in the U.S. – and powers all lighting, heating, air conditioning, and machinery and equipment for Flexo Concepts and the co-located companies.

The solar project is part of a bigger Flexo Concepts’ initiative to “go green.” In 2016, the facility was outfitted with LED lighting, a move that resulted in an annual reduction in energy use significant enough to power six homes for a year. The company also recycles about 80% of its blade material scrap along with all its cardboard waste and employee food packaging.

Headquartered in Plymouth, Massachusetts, Flexo Concepts manufactures TruPoint doctor blades and wash-up blades and MicroClean dry media anilox cleaning systems. All products are designed to improve print quality and reduce operational costs for flexographic and offset printers. Flexo Concepts maintains distribution locations in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia.

API foil answers Hopes & Dreams of satirical new bourbon

A hot stamping foil from brand enhancement specialist API is adding texture and sophistication to the bottle of a unique new bourbon. Hopes & Dreams, which wittily satirises stereotypical handcrafted whiskey marketing in its promotion, features API Copper Kettle foil on its vintage label.

Differentiating itself from other bourbon brands, Hopes & Dreams publicises itself with such underwhelming pull-quotes as ‘Meh’ and ‘It’s good… enough’, and is squarely aimed at millennials, as well as any whiskey drinkers who don’t take themselves too seriously.

On the drink’s attractive Wild West-style label, the API hot stamping foil creates a subtly luxurious feel. It forms the ‘Hopes & Dreams’ lettering, provides a double-line trim around the perimeter, and adds gleam to two sardonic seals of approval that, upon close inspection, boast ‘Unlimited release’.

“I selected the Copper Kettle foil because of its stand-out, gorgeous tone, which had an authenticity that paired nicely with the label design,” says Chad Michael, whose studio designed the label. “As the entire brand is about a ‘boilerplate’ bourbon that has been ‘machine-crafted’, the glamour of the foil might seem ironic – but of course, even a satirical bottle has to look great.”

The foil is printed onto the label by Clove St. Press using an Original Heidelberg press and a copper plate.

“The printer told us the API foil laid down beautifully against our rather toothy paperstock selection,” continues Chad. “From start to finish, the whole job ran very smoothly, with no setbacks encountered, which is testament to the quality of API’s service and product.”

Based in Dallas, Texas, Chad Michael Studio specialises in unique branding, package design, and product innovation. Chad Michael has received numerous accolades since the studio opened in 2014, including Awards of Excellence from Communication Arts magazine, and is a recent recipient of the Young Gun 15 award.
