Asian Paints expresses immense satisfaction with P.E. Labellers's labelling machines

The largest Indian paint manufacturing site being the third one from the dimensional point of view in the whole Asian territory (last year, this manufacturer has added fifteen new production lines), has expressed its satisfaction with the systems P.E. Labellers supplied them with in 2009; in 2011, the company bought eleven new machines being the same as the previously supplied ones.

The orientation systems being mounted on P.E. Labellers's labelling machines are among the most effective systems in the market; if combined with plates handling systems by means of integrated servo drives, such systems are able to ensure an excellent application quality, even in case of special containers.

The aforementioned orientation systems can also be utilized without combining them with labelling stations. As example we can mention the eleven orientation systems Asian Paints - India - has been supplied with. They are equipped with a system consisting of five centring cameras + one print control camera and integrated servo drives; such orientation systems are able to orientate containers at a speed = 8,000p/h. This is the evidence P.E. Labellers is willing to meet even the most demanding customer needs.
Five linear self-adhesive Packlab labellers have also been installed in production lines for 10 and 20 litre buckets, along with the eleven machines supplied by P.E. Labellers. Packlab labellers apply the label onto empty containers; they have a dual orientation system equipped with cameras, thermal transfer overprinting, label presence inspection equipment (also equipped with camera) as well as rejection of all non-conforming containers. Packlab also recently supplied Asian Paints with three labelling machines same as the aforementioned ones.

Asian Paints and many other customers derive benefit from having both companies as one and only supplier: common spare parts and personnel training, effective and timely customer service, reliability and professional competence of two leading companies having a several years' experience in the bottling machines sector.

World Label Awards restructured

Finat, the worldwide association representing the interests of the self-adhesive labelling industry, announces that the L9 has decided to substantially restructure the 'World Label Awards' competition. It is also launching the 'Best-of-the-Best' contest. The L9 is the alliance of global label associations, formulating policies and strategic information in connection with global matters affecting the worldwide label industry.

The World Label Awards (WLA) began in 1991 as an informal 'Ryder Cup' like contest between the associations of Europe (Finat) and North America (TLMI), both of which have well-established regional competitions. In the course of the years other regional associations joined. Geographies that are currently participating include TLMI (North America), JFLP (Japan), LMAI (India), LATMA (Australia), SALMA (New Zealand), PEIAC (China) and FINAT (Europe). With ABIEA (Brazil) and Ametiq (Mexico), Latin America is expected to follow soon.

The changes agreed upon at the L9 meeting in Chicago at Labelexpo Americas last September reflect the evolution of label markets and label converting technology. The new format of the World Label Awards comprises 22 classes which recognizes 'technical excellence' in the different technologies as the main differentiator. The exception being the wine and spirits class, which has separate classes within those technologies. All other segments compete against each other. This arrangement gives many other converters an opportunity to win an award.

The 22 category winners for 2012 were selected by a panel, chaired by Tony White (FINAT), which also consisted of one nominee from each participating association. The winners will be announced in February next year.

The 22 category winners were also the finalists of a new, prestigious L9 'Best-of-the-Best' global awards to be celebrated annually on the occasion of the Labelexpo shows held in September.

The 'L9 Best-of-the-Best' awards, destined to become the 'Oscars of the label industry', will honour the most outstanding labels in each of the 5 major label printing technologies:

  • Flexography
  • Letterpress
  • Offset Litho
  • Combination Printing
  • Digital Printing
The first L9 Best-of-the-Best awards will be presented during the Labelexpo Global Awards gala on the first evening of Labelexpo Europe 2013 in Brussels.

Flint Group announces Narrow Web Print Award winners

Label converters from around the world participated in the eighth annual Flint Group Narrow Web Print Awards competition in September 2012.  Entries were submitted from several countries, including the United States, Italy, China, Argentina and Brazil.  Label submissions utilized a wide range of technologies – UV flexo, water-based flexo, UV screen, special effect inks, and coatings.  And, new in 2012, a category dedicated to UV flexo low migration food packaging!

"The Print Awards continue to be a fantastic tribute to our global customers who demonstrate the most creative use of colour, design, and materials in narrow web label printing," explains Niklas Olsson, Flint Group Narrow Web Global Brand Manager.

He continues, "Each year we receive anywhere from 60 to over 100 print samples for judging; you can only imagine the excellence in print we see from all around the world!  Our team is thrilled each year to see what printers are doing – how they continue to push the boundaries of printing; how they use our inks to create their works of art."

Awards were presented in eight different categories in September 2012 – all print submissions using inks, coatings and specialty products supplied by Flint Group Narrow Web. The winners included:
  •  ACM S.r.l (Italy)
  • Shanghai Komark Labels & Labelling (China)
  • Smyth Companies LLC (U.S.A.)
  • Autopack SA (Argentina)
  • Labelcrafters (U.S.A.)
  • Prakolar Rotulos Autoadhesivos (Brazil)
  • Consolidated Label Company (U.S.A.)

Mike Buystedt, VP Sales Narrow Web North America had this to say, "Judging the label submissions is a great challenge, which is taken very seriously.  Many times, we have to choose between several outstanding print samples in the same category; we have to look to the most intricate detail that sets one great print apart from another.  In some of these cases, we give honourable mention to designs that are a close second."

Criteria for judging followed the guidelines that are standards set by the industry associations FINAT and TLMI and included: registration, smoothness of dot/vignette, overall print quality, and degree of difficulty.  The judges also reviewed each label for creative use of inks and colour – rewarding those prints that exhibit extra-ordinary use of inks.

The Narrow Web Print Awards will continue in 2013 at Labelexpo Brussels in September.  Narrow Web converters from around the world are encouraged to submit printed samples and join this friendly and professional competition of colourful use of inks, design, and print.

Wintek Labels, Bengaluru achieves HD Certification

Wintek Flexo Prints, a leading Indian label printer and converter has achieved the HD Certification from Esko by upgrading its flexo equipment, software and processes to makes plates of higher quality for more consistent print than the standard digital flexo plates that it made earlier. Hoshi Deboo, President, Esko Asia Pacific conferred the HD Certification to the leading Indian label printer Wintek Flexo Prints in Bangalore on September 28, 2012. Hoshi Deboo highlighted “Wintek is a valued partner which is always interested in upgrading to meet the tough quality expectations of their global customers and we are delighted to provide Wintek, Esko’s innovative solutions to meet the best in class global requirements”

On this occasion, Gururaj Ballarwad, managing partner Wintek said, “Meeting the demand for high quality labels was challenging in an industry where print buyers (CPC/FMCG) are informed about what to expect in a market that is globalised. HD Flexo from Esko came in very handy to Wintek as a natural progression to the investments made in prepress few years back. We have seen enormous improvement in the quality of labels and most importantly achieved consistent production. Esko has been our trusted prepress partner as they connect with the needs of a printer and have the solutions to overcome the limitations in flexo printing.”

HD Flexo by Esko combines 4000 dpi HD optics with unique printing screening technologies to achieve sharper and more accurate imaging on CDI imaging devices. The high-resolution optics deliver sharper imaging of text and lines and more clearly defined, better shaped screen dots. The higher resolution imaging on the CDI creates a textured surface on the plate, improving ink lay-down and increasing ink density on the final print. The result is improved image richness and contrast especially helpful for reproduction with white underprints and for Pantone colors.

Wintek Labels is a long time Esko customer with an Esko CDI 2530 with in-line UV curing and workflow software consisting of DeskPack, Flexotools, Plato, FlexRip that will be upgraded to Esko’s Suite 12 shown at drupa. Wintek has in addition, upgraded their DuPont flexo plate solvent processor to DuPont’s Thermal Fast processor.

Wintek Flexo Prints, a leading Indian label printer started as a pre-press house and later diversified to label printing under the direction of partners Gururaj Ballarwad and K M Shahul Hameed paid dividends. Continuous investment in the latest state of the art technology has made Wintek one of the best known names in label printing and converitng in South India. The company has won numerous awards for excellence not only in India but also at the global level. In 2011, the company was acquired by Hyderabad based ITW Signode.
