Standard Register Wins Masters of Quality Supplier Award from Daimler Trucks North America for Its Specialty Labels

Standard Register, a leader in workflow, content and analytics, has been honored for the tenth consecutive year by Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) with the Masters of Quality Supplier Award for its specialty labels. The award was presented by DTNA's Sean Taggart, supplier management quality engineer, to employees at the company's Radcliff, Kentucky, specialty label printing facility.

"A label is just a critical component on the truck, and if it's not right or ready to go, it stops their production line," said Joseph Klenke, President, Product Marking and Decoration, for Standard Register. "We have worked hard over the past 20 years to help ensure Daimler Trucks remains competitive, and are proud to be viewed as a role model for the commercial vehicle supplier base."

The Radcliff facility produces pressure-sensitive labels in several ways - including digital printing, screen printing and with flexography. Standard Register digitally produces an array of safety-focused labels to protect the commercial vehicle operator from on-the-job hazards. The company's expertise in materials science helps ensure these durable labels last for the life of the vehicle.

Ultra high-speed, high-quantity flexographic printing is used for items such as shipping labels, statement-form label combinations, price stickers and packing lists. In both processes, the label construction is multi-web and can be multiple-sided, with inline printing and lamination of the various webs.

As a Masters of Quality supplier, Standard Register has been judged by DTNA to provide top quality components for its Freightliner and Western Star truck brands, as determined on a Balanced Scorecard covering quality, delivery, technology and cost performance. Standard Register produces 15 million labels per day for a wide range of uses, including product marking, shipping, safety and work in process.

Germany’s first Screen Truepress Jet L350UV goes into action at Labelprint24

Germany’s first Screen Truepress Jet L350UV digital label press has been commissioned at Labelprint24 (www.labelprint24.com), one of the country’s leading online label printers. The immediate benefits of the 4-colour + white inkjet web Truepress Jet L350UV, supplied and installed by Dantex, include doubling the production capacity at Labelprint24’s 100%-digital facility in Großenhain, Saxony.

“In addition, the Truepress Jet delivers everything today’s label buyers expect from a leading manufacturer - personalisation, fast turnaround, first-class quality and, combined with our intelligent systems, affordability,” says Managing Director Stefan Harder.

Labelprint24 is recognised as one of the most innovative label printers in Germany, producing a wide range of sheet- and roll-mounted labels for leading companies across the full spectrum of industries, including cosmetics, healthcare, food and manufacturing. Labels range from simple to highly complex products incorporating multi-layer informational booklets, all of which can be ordered online.

Stefan Harder
Labelprint24 is part of the Harder group of companies, which was founded over 50 years ago as a general commercial printer firm. In 2009 Harder decided to pursue an all-digital strategy focused on the labelling and packaging sectors, launching Labelprint24 a year later as the 24-hour web-to-print B2B portal customers use to order labels. Today Labelprint24 sells its products to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland and Czech Republic. Labels represent a significant part of the group’s turnover and this looks set to grow when Labelprint24 expands into France, Italy, the Netherland and Belgium later this year.

Explains Stefan Harder:  “Several key trends persuaded us this was the right path to follow.  One was the steady move from offset to digital printing.  The other was the growing demand for labels to perform more sophisticated functions in industries such as food and pharmaceuticals.  Today labels do much more than just identify products — they are vehicles for marketing promotions, for regulatory information, and so on.  Add in factors such as greater product diversification and shorter lifecycles, and our customers want us to print shorter runs, faster, and to the highest quality.

“With the Screen Truepress Jet L350UV we can meet all these demands.  Because the press is incredibly flexible, it can handle short, medium and long runs and can print on a range of substrates including transparent film and metallic foil.  Its print speed makes it one of the fastest label printing machines in the sector, without any compromise on quality - text is pin-sharp, and images totally photorealistic.  It’s easy to look after too - the automatic printhead cleaning function cuts maintenance to no more than 15 minutes a day.”

Voted “Best Label Printing Solution” in the 2014 European Digital Press Association Awards, the 322mm print-width single-pass Screen Truepress Jet L350UV press is specifically designed to meet brand owners’ increasing demand for value-added packaging to increase product differentiation.  Printing at speeds up to 16.1sqm (173.2sqft) per minute, the innovative inkjet printing system leads the industry for productivity.
Labelprint24 is a trademark of harder-online GmbH. The company is one of the most innovative, owner-operated label printing operations in Germany. Based in Grossenhain (Saxony), Labelprint24 turns out a diverse range of printed, sandwich and booklet labels. The service provider’s e-commerce portfolio also includes special print items, such as printed sticky notes. Its success rests on three pillars: an Internet shop system with immediate price calculation, an automated workflow from order-taking to shipping, and high-tech digital print, finishing and post-press technologies. This approach cuts costs significantly compared to other label printers, and the company passes on this cost advantage directly to customers. With additional sales offices in Frankfurt am Main (Germany), Poland and the Czech Republic, as well as sales partnerships, for example with Famo Druck AG in Switzerland, the company can respond to the unique needs of regional markets and secure continuous growth. Labelprint24′s goal in the medium term is to become the German market leader in Internet-based label sales. harder-online GmbH was founded in 2003 and is excellently positioned in the market with its Internet shops and trademarks: labelprint24.com, labelprint24.ch, unserdrucker.de and haftnotizblock.de. harder-online GmbH has been certified to ISO 9001 since February 2009.

Since being established in 1943, Dainippon Screen has grown significantly in the printing and prepress fields and is currently a leading company in the thermal CtP recorder and on-demand printing system industries. GMG in partnership with Epson and Studio404 show the value of colour control at Packaging Innovations

GMG Color is teaming up with leading innovative technology company Epson and specialist packaging design graphics studio Studio404 at Packaging Innovations (stand GB3). On the stand, colour management software experts GMG will show the importance and benefits of managing colour from packaging and label concept all the way through to the finished product – every time, anywhere, on any material, and by any printing process.

Using the latest technology to produce innovative and colour consistent artwork, GMG will demonstrate GMG ColorProof, the industry leading proofing solution, with Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 large format printer producing contract-level proofs for complex packaging applications. The 24-inch Epson printer uses CMYK + white ink to deliver highly accurate package proofs and is ideally suited to the GMG ColorProof software which offers precise and predictable spot colour simulation.

Alongside, Studio404 will be demonstrating its unique streamlined workflow process which takes creative packaging design concepts and turns them into engineered solutions that are ready to be printed – all enabled by GMG technology.

GMG OpenColor has been a vital technological breakthrough for Studio404, enabling the company to measure colours spectrally, rather than taking traditional colour measurements. Brand owners have very high colour accuracy expectations, no matter where something is printed, and GMG OpenColor is designed to address this complex and error prone problem in package production.

“Packaging Innovations presents GMG with the perfect opportunity to show the importance and benefits of managing colour from concept to creation, onto supermarket shelves and into the consumers’ homes,” says Toby Burnett, MD, GMG Color. “Teaming up with Epson and Studio404 enables us to demonstrate to prepress specialists, print firms, agencies, and brand owners how they can produce consistently better colour simulations, across different substrates and print technologies, and reduce time and costs during the production process.”

Flint Group launches dayGraphica 4100 UV Red Blanket for commercial and packaging UV offset printers

Newly developed UV blanket technology from Flint Group offers commercial and packaging printers the benefit of better blanket performance, longer life and greater versatility. The new product, dayGraphica 4100 UV Red, works with a wider variety of UV inks and washes and is more durable than many existing UV blankets in the market. The product is an ideal match for commercial or packaging printers looking for improved solid reproduction and a more durable UV blanket, in particular when running heavy-gauge stocks.

Bill Branson, Flint Group’s Business Director – North American Blankets, credits the Flint Group technology team for addressing two major challenges facing UV printers: blanket swell and durability. “The team was able to reduce swelling with a unique rubber formulation and increase durability by developing a compressible carcass that can better withstand the pressures and damaging effects of smashes.”

Mr. Branson notes that dayGraphica 4100 UV Red is designed specifically for a dedicated UV ink and wash environment. In that setting, printers experience superior ink transfer without embossing on coated and uncoated stocks, less edge cutting from heavy stocks, and faster sheet and web release.

“Users of the dayGraphica 4100 UV Red blanket also get the benefit of Flint Group’s full-rounded expertise,” adds Mr. Branson. “Because our ink, blanket and chemical teams work together, we can help customers choose inks and washes that optimize the performance of this newly developed UV blanket.”

GMG brings a wide range of color management workflow and proofing technologies to Labelexpo 2014

GMG, the leading developer and supplier of high-end color management software solutions, will be showing a complete complement of color management and proofing systems for label printing at booth 6511. Being held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, Rosemont, IL from September 9-11, Labelexpo Americas is the continent's largest event for the label, product decoration, web printing and converting industry.

“While matching brand colors has always been of paramount importance, the ongoing trend of printing labels on digital presses - as well as traditional offset, flexo and gravure presses—has made color management even more critical. It is now a matter of ensuring that color from any print process matches that of any other process. It is also critical, as the print supply chain extends itself, that color always matches no matter who is working on a file, by accessing an image file from a master color space. GMG is looking forward to demonstrating our expertise in just about any facet of color management—from proofing to workflow,” comments Joseph Varone, GMG Americas vice president of sales. “Specifically, we look forward to showing our expertise in creating predictive proofing for spot colors and overprints with our award-winning GMG OpenColor, and building complete, late-binding RGB workflows with GMG ColorMaster.”

GMG OpenColor: Precisely predict the color appearance of printed inks
A major highlight at the GMG booth is GMG OpenColor, the 2013 recipient of a Flexographic Technical Association Technical Innovation Award and an InterTech Technology Award. A continuing trend in label printing is the increasing complexity of jobs and the use of multi-color printing. Many labels require different combinations of inks, substrates, screening, and other variables. One of the most difficult challenges facing a converter is accurately and reliably communicating color to the supply chain. Until now, to accurately communicate a mix of colors, every combination would require a specific test chart showing the different combinations—a costly process that involves color fingerprint charts, the making of plates, and lengthy testing.  GMG OpenColor is a proofing technology that precisely predicts the color appearance of printed inks, particularly spot colors and ‘overprints’—inks printed on top of each other. This allows the previously unattainable ability to assure a proof will accurately simulate a printed result. GMG OpenColor resolves this complex problem and provides highly accurate color profiles, with less information.

The spectral color engine of GMG OpenColor 1.1 is now capable of creating up to 15 channels profiles without fingerprinting the press. The software automatically averages data, especially helpful when importing data collected at different press run times. As a result, any possible deviation is included in the final profile calculation. Flexo prepress companies, particularly, will profit from the new color intensity and dot gain adjustments. Users can define a target dot gain from a specific printing process or adjust dot gain measurements to compensate for possible faulty printing conditions, which can occur during reference print runs or color standard productions. GMG OpenColor also has a connection to spectral color information from Colibri (matchmycolor) and PantoneLIVE (X-Rite). GMG OpenColor allows those who adopt Expanded Color Gamut Printing to create 5-, 6- or 7-color profiles from just a few patches or with the help of multicolor test charts.

GMG ColorMaster 2.1: Keep images in an RGB space until you need them
RGB data storage and workflows have become increasingly popular, particularly with the use of a wider variety of media and print processes. GMG ColorMaster is attractive for companies—such as ad agencies, repro shops, prepress businesses and print buyers—that want to keep their data in the RGB color space as long as possible. It also helps those who process print globally—such as brand owners or global converters—who need to consider different standards. GMG ColorMaster helps provide a color-accurate late-binding RGB-workflow, meaning that images are not converted from their RGB space until needed.

By viewing images in the GMG ColorMaster color space, content originators—typically photographers—can make image adjustments early before storing files into the database. Unlike other RGB workflows, GMG ColorMaster offers viewing on a virtual CMYK color space, which guarantees WYSIWYG for print—either previewed on a monitor, or a GMG ColorMaster hard proof. Once the image has been retouched within the GMG ColorMaster color space, the ‘master’ RGB file can be output to any industry standard with confidence of its color accuracy. It offers a high degree of automation, and prepress departments can experience up to 50% timesavings. GMG ColorMaster 2.1 offers a process-neutral workflow and extremely flexible format for image data storage. It supplies predefined settings and optimized profiles for most popular target color spaces and a color space that covers all common printing gamuts—including the ability to accurately convert CMYK files to RGB. Using GMG ColorMaster assures once-only color correction, regardless of the ultimate output standard and direct output to any media standard, without further file alterations. With GMG ColorMaster, printers can experience shorter print makeready times, and consistent print quality.

A complete resource of color management of proofing solutions
Many other GMG products will be available for demonstration at Labelexpo. They include:

GMG ColorProof 5.5: With the most recent version of the popular proofing software, users will not only find much quicker startup and job creating times, but some helpful user interface improvements – particularly within the new Manual Job Manager. Customers working with packaging will benefit from the enhanced handling of white ink and transparent areas when proofing on foil, along with enhanced integration with GMG OpenColor. GMG DotProof users will find a much sharper dot. GMG ColorProof now alerts the administrator when attention is needed—for example, to load paper, calibrate a printer, or fix a job error. Full 64-bit support allows for the use of more RAM, significantly boosting the processing power. For packaging, GMG ColorProof 5.5 also offers optimized white printing and improved quality control of spot colors for label companies.  A remote proofing edition is also available for supply chain partners to review hardcopies of proofs in their offices.

GMG ColorServer 4.9: A recently updated version of the popular color management software, GMG ColorServer provides superior, easy-to-use color management, delivering consistent and repeatable color results to all output processes—print as well as online digital displays. New for GMG ColorServer 4.9 is support for the PDF/VT-1 variable-data printing (VDP) file format. Part of the challenge of variable-data printing is the often extremely fast file processing requirements to ensure just-in-time delivery to the latest generation of high-speed digital printing presses. GMG has addressed this issue from two directions. First, the current 32-bit version of the application has been greatly optimized. Second, for even faster performance, GMG is releasing a 64-bit native version, which offers almost unlimited file processing capabilities. GMG ColorServer 4.9 also offers an extremely accurate CMYK to RGB lossless conversion process that enlarges the color space back to the file’s original RGB values. This allows for color space normalization within an RGB-based image database, only performing the device/process specific CMYK conversion at the final output stage. The Paper Adaption Tool in GMG ColorServer lets print service providers recalculate a file’s color data against a particular support material, even if the particular proof simulates a different final stock.

GMG CoZone, a modular production environment based in the cloud, is an indispensable control center for every online production workflow. Content 100% safe; there is no more email forwarding. Users can create configurable download access, with easy to manage permission options. GMG CoZone integrates the cloud and project collaboration with high-quality color management toolsets. The GMG CoZone Collaborate module allows project participants to manage, review, proof and approve graphic arts content. The latest version of GMG CoZone offers unique and intuitive mark-up tools for online proofing. The GMG CoZone pricing model is ‘Pay per job’, which means that licensing for unlimited number of users is available without causing any additional costs.

“GMG is being adopted by many label printers and brand owners who require matching colors on any substrate,” adds Varone. We look forward to advising printers how to achieve accurate, repeatable color for labels, no matter the workflow or print process,”

Sun Chemical Showcases Solutions for Corrugated Printers

During Corrugated Week 2014, Sun Chemical will show corrugated printers a wide range of solutions that can help graphics pop and improve pressroom efficiency. Visitors of Sun Chemical booth #417 will be introduced to high-definition plate technology, inks, and pressroom consumable products which offer sharper images, superior print quality, and efficiency to avoid many of the common printing defects that corrugated printers face.

“Corrugated printers are looking for solutions that enhance productivity, improve pressroom performance and help the final packaging pop off the shelf,” said Tony Renzi, Vice President of Product Management Packaging Inks, North American Inks, Sun Chemical. “Our range of solutions on display during Corrugated Week does just that. We can take corrugated printers from concept to consumer with design, pre-press, color management, ink, coatings, and plates.”

Packaging that Jumps off the Shelf
By partnering with Sun Chemical SunGraphics, corrugated printers will have access to high-definition plate technology utilizing Esko HD software to print with an image quality of up to 4,000 PPI, resulting in more impactful graphics that jump off the shelf. Combining HD quality with flat-top dot plate technology increases capabilities by offering an expanded tonal range and wider color gamut.

Sun Chemical HD plates also creates a uniform height printing surface between the screens and solids versus conventional digital plates. The uniform surface allows for more even impression across the plate.

The system sharpens images even further, allowing for smooth screen transitions to zero, reduction or elimination of hard edge highlight screen breaks, and decreased dot gain while minimizing the fluting effect, a printing defect especially noticeable in corrugated printing.

Inks that Provide Strong Color Strength and pH Stability
Converters looking for inks that provide high print quality and color strength can benefit from Sun Chemical’s SunVisto Advantage HS, an ink that delivers both superior print quality and the pH stability needed for corrugated stocks.

SunVisto Advantage HS inks provide for higher color strength for use with higher line aniloxes and eliminate the need for special GCMI color matches when added strength is required to hit GCMI color targets. The Advantage HS inks are also 40-50 percent stronger than conventional mid-grade GCMI inks.

The ink line increases pressroom productivity by reducing the need for pH adjustments during long press runs. Contrary to typical water-based inks which lose pH during long press runs and lead to dirty print and ink build-up, SunVisto Advantage HS inks eliminate the concern of pH control from the beginning to the end of a production run.

Designed for mid-level to high-end graphics for most paper stock, SunVisto Advantage HS inks provide exceptional print quality for both single and multi-color jobs on standard corrugated linerboards and substantially increase the ease of  clean-up compared to similar inks.

Laser-Marking Coating Solutions Allows for Variable Coding of Graphic Information
Visitors can also see live demonstrations of Sun Chemical’s SunLase laser marking solutions, a coating that enables brand owners to add information to both secondary and primary packaging information after the filling and closure of the pack, whether for practical supply chain purposes or as a late stage packaging differentiator.

The SunLase solution prints a transparent or tinted coating onto a packaging substrate during the printing process. After the packaging has been sealed, variable coding graphic information, such as barcodes, QR codes, and “Use By” dates or branding, can be created using a low power CO2 or fiber laser to change the color of the patch to black where marked, with no risks to the packaged product.

Sun Chemical’s Complete Line of Pressroom Consumable Products
Sun Chemical offers a complete line of pressroom consumable products, including fountain solutions that are specifically formulated to meet the needs of individual press requirements, blankets, silicones, conditioners and pressroom washes for end use applications.

One new consumable technology on display will be the SunVisto Anilox Renew and the SunVisto Power Scrub and Anilox Renew. The SunVisto Anilox Renew is a highly concentrated cleaner designed to provide a deep cleaning foam that brings heavily soiled plates and anilox rollers back to their “like new” condition. Anilox Renew minimizes or eliminates the need for sending anilox rollers out for cleaning. By applying it weekly, most anilox rolls will not require bi-weekly removal and blasting, eliminating costs and improving overall quality.

SunVisto Power Scrub uses the same technology built into Anilox Renew at a more economical price and can be used on any surface. The non-corrosive foaming technology of Power Scrub allows a customer to control the amount of cleaner being applied, reducing the amount of wasted wash.

Nilpeter demonstrations a success at Labelexpo Americas

Visitors in large numbers accepted Nilpeter's invitation to “Join” the company’s display of UV-flexo presses for producing high quality labels and package printing at LabelExpo in Chicago. The main exhibits were the Nilpeter high-performance FB-3 and the highly innovative FA-4*.

“We saw visitors on our show floor really wanting to take advantage of the automation on these presses”, said Paul Teachout, Vice President of Sales & Marketing in North America. “We presented a flexografic solution to meet the digital challenge and affect the cross-over point between flexo and digital. Now with a simple recall of a job, fast change of plate cylinders, with full automation resetting the job, we are back into impression and register with zero waste, and that is highly competitive.”

The company also experienced strong interest in the inline QC-Die, Nilpeter’s value-adding magnetic die unit. This module allows operators to ergonomically change cylinders in less than 10 seconds. “The guards come up, the new die slides in, the guards come down, and the automation does the rest. People were really pleased to see that, because the converting is at the same LEAN level as the rest of the press”, Paul Teachout explained.

Other attractions was the Expanded Gamut process demonstrated on the FB-3 UV-flexo press, which produced impeccable labels for the health and beauty sector, as well as Juice Label shrink sleeves. Also the FP-4 flatbed unit for hot foil and embossing on the FA-4* created much interest among premium-quality wine label converters.

The FA-4* is now offered in 17” for the North American flexible packaging market, and with all the automation benefits, this press becomes very attractive to the segment. Nilpeter has invited many of the exhibition visitors into its Technology Centers in Slagelse, Denmark, and in Cincinnati, Ohio, where they will be given the opportunity to design their very own demo day
