Sun Chemical introduces new SunCure Aspire UV Offset Inks for luxury folding carton applications

Sun Chemical has launched a new UV offset ink that was developed to make sophisticated graphics look stunning and vibrant on high-end luxury folding cartons while at the same time providing the longer-term shelf appeal brand owners require.

The new ink system, SunCure Aspire UV, has been formulated to exhibit immense color transparency to help create vivid color graphic effects on metallized, lenticular and holographic board stocks frequently used for pharmaceutical, perfume, liquor, cosmetic and POP applications.

In addition to providing the essential packaging charisma that brands require for high-end folding carton applications, SunCure Aspire UV inks offer excellent transfer, a wide water window, a high degree of lithographic stability, very high pigment strength to ensure mileage on press, and good lightfastness so shelf appeal remains consistent over time. This ink system has been designed to work extremely well with Sun Chemical’s SunInspire special effects coatings to make cartons truly stand out.

The new UV ink system does not use any of the “exclusion-type photoinitiators” that are sometimes considered to be a concern to many brand owners and regulatory bodies. SunCure Aspire UV inks also deliver very good adhesion properties to many non-porous substrates.

SunCure Aspire UV inks come in a complete line of high strength blending colors for all spot color needs, and meet ISO color requirements for GRACoL G7 applications.

Label Resources acquires Domino N610i 7-Color Digital UV inkjet Label Press

Label Resources, a Canadian-based label printer converter, is pleased to announce the acquisition of the Domino N610i 7-color digital UV inkjet label press as part of their expansion into a recently purchased state-of-the-art facility in Langley, British Columbia. The Domino N610i is a key component of Label Resources’ growth strategy.

“Our venture into digital started some seven years ago with a Primera desk-top short run system. Realizing the need for increased production speed and Order Processing Automation, we installed a full Labeltraxx software system and an EFI Jetrion 4950 digital press four years ago. Increasing customer demands with run sizes of 100 to 100,000 feet necessitated more throughput, so increasing the speed by two-and-a-half times with the Domino N610i was an easy decision,” says Jerry Marincelj, President of Label Resources.

One of the key factors in choosing Domino was that it has proven, reliable technology. The Domino N610i digital UV inkjet is a production-ready digital label press that is the perfect balance allowing label printer converters to continue to grow their business while providing their brand owner customers with beautifully printed, highly durable labels.

“With a color gamut of 92% of Pantone colors, Process Metallic Color system and full color Variable Data Print capabilities of up to 246 ft. /minute, we are sure to dazzle our customers with exceptional quality, service, and affordability like never before,” says Jerry.

“For the most discerning customers that require additional spot colors, our new ABG finisher will allow a hybrid setup with additional UV or water based colors, foiling, over-laminating, back printing and varnishing. To assure finishing can keep pace with our new Domino, our ABG is equipped with automated back scoring and web separation as well as currently the fastest semi-rotary die station running up to 492 ft. /minute,” adds Jerry.

Label Resources is enthusiastic with the growth they’ve seen in their business over the years and the future is bright. “Digital made a significant difference to our traditional Flexo business and is without a doubt the most exciting development in our industry’s future…especially when outpacing our Flexo growth at a 3:1 ratio,” concludes Jerry.

Temkin completes its installation of PCMC’s Meridian laser anilox cleaner

Paper Converting Machine Company (PCMC), part of Barry-Wehmiller, is pleased to announce that Temkin International Inc.—a leader in the flexible film packaging industry located in Payson, Utah—has completed its installation of PCMC’s Meridian laser anilox cleaner.

Formerly known as the Graphbury laser anilox cleaner, the Meridian uses a powerful laser to clean anilox cells without damaging them, by vaporizing deposited particles inside of the cells. It deeply cleans chrome and ceramic rolls of any line screen without causing surface wear. The result is a superior clean, improved print quality and a longer life for anilox rolls.

“The addition of the Meridian laser anilox cleaner has significantly saved us time and money,” commented John Cowens, Director of Printing and Prepress at Temkin International. “Using our old cleaning method, we would lose volume over time, which would require us to use more expensive base inks to achieve color, as well as creating downtime to tone ink. With the Meridian laser anilox cleaner, rolls are cleaned to near full volume minus wear, which eliminates our need for adding base and toning time.”

A worldwide leader in designing and manufacturing inline and CI presses, PCMC also offers customers a commitment to quality and a dedication to service. The company acquired Graphbury Machines, LLC, in August of 2017.

“The decision to buy from PCMC was an easy one,” continued Cowens. “The Meridian has advanced laser technology and is backed by PCMC’s superior customer service and support.”

“I’m thrilled that Temkin International has had such exceptional results with the Meridian laser anilox cleaner,” said Rich Stratz, Regional Sales Manager at PCMC. “The Meridian is a great complement to the other PCMC machines that Temkin runs.”

Ovelar takes shrink sleeve production to the next level

Ovelar has again broadened its shrink sleeve production through the addition of a new MPS combination press, its fourth investment from the Dutch press manufacturer for the growing labelling technology. Shrink sleeves has proven to be a lucrative segment for Ovelar, and the company continually invests in innovative shrink sleeve label decoration technologies and actively pursues new applications.

In addition to flexographic plates, rotogravure printing units are also integrated into Ovelar’s new MPS press which can apply various types of high-quality inks or vibrant graphic effects to shrink sleeves. Jesús Ovelar, CEO of Grupo Ovelar commented about their additional MPS investment: “This new press is intended for production of highly complex shrink sleeves, which brand owners are increasingly adapting in their packaging portfolios, as a way to further differentiate themselves in a highly competitive market. This investment will further strengthen Ovelar’s position in this segment, in which our company provides printing widths from 430mm to 660mm and an extensive range of finishing options.

Grupo Impryma, the local MPS representative in Spain led the sale, and according to its CEO Félix Prieto, MPS quote requests for this type of combined press have increased due to a higher demand for shrink sleeves and growing interest for smaller production runs. “MPS has specialised in this segment in recent years by designing very complex machines with a much higher number of printing units, resulting in more finishing options than has traditionally been provided by rotary presses, ” said Prieto.

“This latest press sale to Ovelar is the most complex MPS machine on the Spanish market,” Eric Hoendervangers, MPS Commercial Director commented. “We are pleased to receive Ovelar’s continued trust in MPS through the purchase of their fourth press, to further solidify their position as a leader in the Spanish shrink sleeve market,” he added.

Ovelar was awarded by Liderpack 2017 the Best in Show Packaging distinction for its Mojitos Karibeño sleeve printed with 8-colour high resolution UV flexo printing. The awards ceremony will be held at Hispack 2018 in May.

MPS is a worldwide, well-known and high-quality brand of flexo and offset press solutions for label and flexible packaging printers.

X-Rite and Pantone bring Unique End-to-End Color Solutions to Color Conference 2018

X-Rite Incorporated, a global leader in color science and technology, and its subsidiary Pantone LLC, announced a significant presence at the Color Conference 2018, hosted by Printing Industries of America, January 13 – 16, 2018 in San Diego. During the event, X-Rite thought leaders, including Adrian Fernandez, General Manager at Pantone, will share valuable insights on such topics as how to ensure specified colors can actually be achieved in production, the impact of the latest industry standards on printing outcomes, and going beyond color to managing appearance.

The Color Conference also marks the first time X-Rite’s award-winning Total Appearance Capture (TAC) ecosystem will be presented at a print and packaging event. The TAC ecosystem brings a new level of accuracy and efficiency to the capture, communication and presentation of physical materials in the virtual world. With TAC, product designers can incorporate physically correct, virtual materials into leading design and rendering tools to create photorealistic 3D images for product designs, packaging and marketing materials to accelerate the design, creation and merchandising process.

“X-Rite is pleased to once again be a Platinum sponsor of the Color Conference,” said Fernandez. “Over the past few years, the Printing Industries of America has done an excellent job of broadening the audience for this event, including an increased attendance by brands and designers. We are looking forward to sharing thoughts and information with attendees that will help streamline the color workflow, making color communication more predictable and reliable.”

X-Rite Speakers to Share Expertise
X-Rite color experts will be conducting several sessions during the Color Conference, including:

"Beyond Color: Capturing Appearance Characteristics" by Thomas Meeker, 3D Solution Architect
In this session, Meeker will discuss how designers, agencies and brand owners can digitize all of the appearance characteristics of a physical sample, not just color but also texture, gloss, special effects and reflection properties. This is especially important for the increasingly complex materials available to designers today – from effect paints used on automotive exteriors to synthetics and meshes used in sportswear. Imagine a scanner that can capture both color and appearance data, and then render that into a physically correct virtual material that can be viewed in a virtual light booth. See what’s on the horizon of print production workflow in this very informative session.

"How Color Specificity brings about Efficiency" by Adrian Fernandez
There’s a tug-of-war that often occurs between design (innovation) and production (execution), creating a cycle of miscommunication, rework, and conflict. Creatives want to have more choices for how they bring their designs and colors to life. In production, printers are focused on quality, efficiency, delivery, and cost. The back-and-forth negotiation that occurs between these two groups as a product is finalized can result in significant waste and lost productivity. In this session, attendees will learn ways this potential conflict can be resolved, making it faster, easier, and more cost effective for the design intent to be faithfully executed in production.

"Getting Color Right Before It Goes Wrong" by Nick Bazarian, Portfolio Manager, Pantone Digital
Color is often the most critical design element for influencing purchasing decisions with consumers. In this talk, Pantone’s Nick Bazarian will discuss and demo a series of tools and applications that give designers and pre-media a new level of insight into the “achievability” of a given color in the earliest stages of the design process. These new tools facilitate easier communication and more realistic expectations between designers and printers/converters, reducing rework, time and cost for everyone.

"What’s New in Standards and Why Should You Care?" by Ray Cheydleur, Printing and Imaging Product Portfolio Manager
In his role as CGATS Chairman and Chairman of TAG, the primary standards body governing the graphic arts industry, Ray is intimately involved in bringing standards to market, and keeping them updated. In this session, he will cover color standards recently accredited in 2017, including a discussion of where these standards are being implemented and when. He will also discuss the importance of staying current with standards development, where certification is important and how to get certified by various organizations, and answer questions from the audience on this somewhat complex topic.

Brunch with the Standards Gurus will be held on Tuesday where Ray Cheydleur will be participating in a lively panel discussion with other industry experts discussing the importance and impact of current and emerging standards.

X-Rite will also have the latest hardware and software on display in the conference exhibit hall, with color experts on hand to conduct demonstrations and answer attendee questions.

The dedicated packaging design-focused conference will be hosted and chaired by Rhonda Jiang, Editor-in-Chief at Package & Design Magazine, and will boast major names from all over the globe, specifically focusing on the creative design community. After a stint at Shiseido Europe, she moved to Shanghai to develop the package design team.

Also speaking as part of The Pentawards will be MS Xiaojing Huang, Strategic Director at Yang Design. World’s largest T-shirt made from plastic bottles by Plast India Foundation

The world’s largest T-shirt has been fashioned out of two lakh plastic bottles collected by NGOs from across the city. The T-shirt measuring 97.5 metres in height and 70.08 in width and made using recycled plastic waste polyethylene terephthalate bottles has created a Guinness World Record.

Plastindia Foundation, the apex body of plastics industry in India, said it took up the initiative to create awareness of the need to manage plastics waste and recycle them more efficiently. It said it wanted to achieve sustainability through the optimal use of plastic waste. The fabric from the T-shirt will be later used to create 10,000 T-shirts and will be distributed to children from the weaker sections of society.

To mark the achievement, the Plastindia Foundation team hosted a press conference on 5 January 2017, at the Goregaon Sports Club in Mumbai.

On the occasion K.K. Seksaria, president, Plastindia Foundation, said, “It was a four-month-long process, which included making the yarn, and stitching the T-shirt. Thousands of people were involved from all over India and mainly from Mumbai because the project was being executed here. We have taken up this exercise to deliver this message to people, in a manner that it is etched in their minds. We have made the world’s largest T-shirt out of used plastic bottles within Mumbai. We want to show to the masses that whenever you see any plastic material or plastic article, they should not consider it as a waste material but a raw material of sorts.”

Addressing the press conference, Atul Kanuga, chairman of the environment and plastic image committee, Plastindia Foundation, said, “We cannot manage our day-to-day life without the use of plastics. Right from toothpastes to telephones and laptops, we ourselves are wearing plastic. Today, jeans are no more cotton, but made out of polyester.”

Mr. Seksaria added that the aim was to show that every plastic material can be a useful resource and it does not necessarily have to harm the environment if it is used in a responsible and sustainable manner. “Plastic is not bad and this has been proven today,” said Vimal Kedia, managing director, Manjushree Technopack Limited.

“The challenge before us is the disposal of plastic. We are proud to say that India is one of the largest recyclers of plastic bottles and other plastics. This initiative is a big step towards educating people that articles can be made out of used plastics, they can be reused and recycled,” Atul Kanuga added.

“While a lot is being invested in this project by means of extensive and exhaustive data collection, we would be happy to receive your entries / corrections/ additions for the same. And what best way to reach out to the industry than by making your presence felt in the directory by way of advertisements,” says Gargi Bhattacharya, Business Development Manager, Labels India - India’s exclusive magazine for the labels, packaging and the converting industry.

Mintel announces five global packaging trends for 2018

Mintel, the world's leading market intelligence agency, has announced five trends set to impact the global packaging industry over the coming year. In 2018:
  • Packaging will play a pivotal role in reducing global food and product waste.
  • Online brands will reinvigorate their packaging in order to enhance the e-commerce experience.
  • Brands who adopt clear and succinct package messaging will be rewarded as consumers prefer brands that embrace minimalism.
  • Brands will be called to keep marine conservation at the forefront of packaging development and to anchor the circular economy for future generations.
  • Contemporary packaging formats will see the center-of-store take center stage.
Looking ahead, David Luttenberger, Global Packaging Director at Mintel, discusses the major trends set to influence the packaging sector worldwide in 2018, including implications for consumers, brands, and manufacturers.

Packaged Planet
The throwaway culture of today will evolve into one that understands and embraces the role of packaging as a primary means to reduce global food and product waste.

Consumers have long considered packaging as often unnecessary, and ultimately as just waste to be disposed of. But that misconception is now changing. A focus on package innovations that extend food freshness, preserve ingredient fortification, and ensure safe delivery is increasingly benefiting consumers. Brands will need to act fast by exploiting on-pack communication tools to educate consumers to the benefits packaging can bring, from extending shelf life of food to providing efficient and safe access to essential products in developed and underserved regions of the world.

As more and more consumers embrace online shopping, packaging will play a pivotal role in brands' and consumers' e-commerce experiences. Online shopping is becoming increasingly widespread around the globe and is near ubiquitous in some markets. However, while online shopping's key advantage is convenience, consumers expect more from their favored brands. When designing packaging to be viewed online, and transit packaging to be opened upon delivery in the home, the experience of e-commerce packaging must reflect consumer expectations from shopping with that brand in-store.

Clean Label 2.0
Aiming for packaging designs that enlighten consumers' purchase decisions, brands will reject approaches that offer too much or too little as they can leave shoppers more confused than informed.

Today's consumers are more informed than ever; however, brands are in real danger of being rejected if consumers feel overloaded with information, leading to the questioning of provenance, authenticity, and transparency. The 'essentialist' design principle bridges the divide between not enough and just enough of what's essential for consumers to make an enlightened and confident purchasing decision. Brands must bring the next generation of clean label to packaging design to provide a moment of calm and clarity for shoppers in an increasingly hectic retail environment.

Sea Change
Plastic packaging adrift in the world's oceans will become the catalyst driving brands to rethink packaging in a context consumers can understand and act upon. Concerns over safe packaging disposal will increasingly color consumers' perceptions of different packaging types, and impact shopper purchase decisions. Only by communicating that a brand is working toward a solution will this growing barrier to purchase be overcome. While collecting waste plastic from the sea to recycle into new packaging can raise consumer awareness, it won't solve the problem. In order to keep plastic out of the sea, a renewed effort toward the circular economy is needed to keep packaging material in use.

Brands will look to contemporary packaging formats to help reinvigorate the center-of-store aisles less visited by younger consumers. Young shoppers are increasingly 'shopping the periphery,' visiting the fresh and chilled aisles around the store perimeter and turning their backs on processed, ambient, and frozen offerings in the center of the store. The use of transparent materials, contemporary design, recyclability, or unique shapes can help draw in younger consumers to the store center, making it as appealing as the burgeoning perimeter to younger consumers.

David Luttenberger, Global Packaging Director at Mintel, said: "Our packaging trends for 2018 reflect the most current and forward-looking consumer attitudes, actions, and purchasing behaviors in both global and local markets. Such trends as those we see emerging in e-commerce packaging have stories that are just now being written. Others, such as the attack on plastics, are well into their third or even fourth chapters, but with no clear ending in sight. It is those backstories and future-forward implications that position Mintel's 2018 Packaging Trends as essential to retailer, brand, and package converter strategies during the coming year and beyond."
