Sun Chemical introduces new SunCure Aspire UV Offset Inks for luxury folding carton applications

Sun Chemical has launched a new UV offset ink that was developed to make sophisticated graphics look stunning and vibrant on high-end luxury folding cartons while at the same time providing the longer-term shelf appeal brand owners require.

The new ink system, SunCure Aspire UV, has been formulated to exhibit immense color transparency to help create vivid color graphic effects on metallized, lenticular and holographic board stocks frequently used for pharmaceutical, perfume, liquor, cosmetic and POP applications.

In addition to providing the essential packaging charisma that brands require for high-end folding carton applications, SunCure Aspire UV inks offer excellent transfer, a wide water window, a high degree of lithographic stability, very high pigment strength to ensure mileage on press, and good lightfastness so shelf appeal remains consistent over time. This ink system has been designed to work extremely well with Sun Chemical’s SunInspire special effects coatings to make cartons truly stand out.

Label Resources acquires Domino N610i 7-Color Digital UV inkjet Label Press

Label Resources, a Canadian-based label printer converter, is pleased to announce the acquisition of the Domino N610i 7-color digital UV inkjet label press as part of their expansion into a recently purchased state-of-the-art facility in Langley, British Columbia. The Domino N610i is a key component of Label Resources’ growth strategy.

“Our venture into digital started some seven years ago with a Primera desk-top short run system. Realizing the need for increased production speed and Order Processing Automation, we installed a full Labeltraxx software system and an EFI Jetrion 4950 digital press four years ago. Increasing customer demands with run sizes of 100 to 100,000 feet necessitated more throughput, so increasing the speed by two-and-a-half times with the Domino N610i was an easy decision,” says Jerry Marincelj, President of Label Resources.

Pharmapack: New Tamper Evident Labeller from LSS

At Pharmapack, LSS Labelling Systems Scandinavia will launch a new Tamper Evident labelling machine for the pharmaceutical industry at the Novexx Solutions booth (Paris, 2018, February, 7 – 8, Hall 7.1, D60).

The new Tamper Evident Labeller from Danish labelling expert LSS is in compliance with the European Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) 2011/62/EU. Part of this directive is the requirement for tamper proof security of cartons. The Tamper Evident labeller from LSS seals the carton. As an option, a printer and vision system of any brand can be integrated to provide each carton with a unique identification for track & trace and serialisation.

The LSS Tamper Evident Labeller has a capacity of up to 300 cartons per minute. It provides tamper proof sealing of reverse tuck end and airplane closing cartons. The flexible machine handles cartons ranging from 50 to 220 mm in width, 15 to 120 mm in height and 40 to 120 mm in length. Both transparent and non-transparent labels can be applied. Due to its small foot-print, the new Tamper Evident Labeller is easy to fit into any production area, and can be used as an off-line or in-line unit. The user-friendly HMI makes the machine very easy to operate. The Tamper Evident Labeller is designed with focus on minimising the time spent on batch change and line clearance.

When entering the LSS Tamper Evident Labeller, each carton’s position and length is registered. The labeller can stop and restart the process at any position and still maintain a safe product register. Starting in early 2019, pharmaceutical serialisation will become a legal requirement for companies in the European Union. In the US, it has been compulsory since November 2017 under the United States Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA).

Apex customers draw attention in three Flexo Print Award ceremonies

During three recent reputable 2017 award ceremonies, numerous Apex International customers were nominated and 34 were declared award winners for their submissions printed with Apex anilox technology. EFTA Benelux, FlexoTech and FlexoStars recognized the finest in flexo printed paper and corrugated board.

The 2nd EFTA-Benelux Flexo Awards, a biennial competition that accepts entries from printers in Belgium and The Netherlands, was held in Antwerp on November 9th. During the ceremony where gold, silver and bronze awards were presented in ten categories, seven of eight print gold awards were Apex customers: Max Aarts B.V. (flexo print on foil/narrow), Oerlemans Plastics B.V. (flexo print on foil/wide), Etiket Nederland (flexo print on paper/small), Papierindustrie Adriaan Dekker B.V. (flexo print on paper/medium), Mondi Poperinge (flexo print on paper/wide), and double award-winner VPK Packaging N.V. (corrugated post print/uncoated and corrugated post print coated).

On November 23rd, the FlexoTech Awards, one of the most prestigious international events for flexo prints took place in London. Four Apex customers took home a gold award: Coveris (UV flexo paper & board), Stora Enso (corrugated post-print, C-Flute and above), Smurfit Kappa CRP (sacks and corrugated preprint liner), and Flex-N- Roll (any flexo job previously printed by another process).

Recognizing the best flexo prints in France, the French Technical Association of Flexography (ATF) held its 31 st edition of FlexoStars in Saint-Malo on December 14 th . Gold winners that printed with Apex anilox technology were: Sical (corrugated cardboard post print on uncoated), International Paper (corrugated cardboard post print on coated), Richard Laleu (paper-based printing), Gascogne Sacs (complex films printed with water-based ink), Lysipack (awarded twice for aluminum printing and continuous printing on paper) and Palamy (non-complex films: polyethylene - PP - polyester - polyamide – PVC). Gascogne Sacks was also awarded the Technical Jury Award, and Smurfit Kappa Colorys received the Artistic Jury Award. Additional Apex customers also received silver & bronze awards and nominations in all three events.

Temkin completes its installation of PCMC’s Meridian laser anilox cleaner

Paper Converting Machine Company (PCMC), part of Barry-Wehmiller, is pleased to announce that Temkin International Inc.—a leader in the flexible film packaging industry located in Payson, Utah—has completed its installation of PCMC’s Meridian laser anilox cleaner.

Formerly known as the Graphbury laser anilox cleaner, the Meridian uses a powerful laser to clean anilox cells without damaging them, by vaporizing deposited particles inside of the cells. It deeply cleans chrome and ceramic rolls of any line screen without causing surface wear. The result is a superior clean, improved print quality and a longer life for anilox rolls.

“The addition of the Meridian laser anilox cleaner has significantly saved us time and money,” commented John Cowens, Director of Printing and Prepress at Temkin International. “Using our old cleaning method, we would lose volume over time, which would require us to use more expensive base inks to achieve color, as well as creating downtime to tone ink. Ovelar takes shrink sleeve production to the next level

Ovelar has again broadened its shrink sleeve production through the addition of a new MPS combination press, its fourth investment from the Dutch press manufacturer for the growing labelling technology. Shrink sleeves has proven to be a lucrative segment for Ovelar, and the company continually invests in innovative shrink sleeve label decoration technologies and actively pursues new applications.

In addition to flexographic plates, rotogravure printing units are also integrated into Ovelar’s new MPS press which can apply various types of high-quality inks or vibrant graphic effects to shrink sleeves. Jesús Ovelar, CEO of Grupo Ovelar commented about their additional MPS investment: “This new press is intended for production of highly complex shrink sleeves, which brand owners are increasingly adapting in their packaging portfolios, as a way to further differentiate themselves in a highly competitive market. Grupo Impryma, the local MPS representative in Spain led the sale, and according to its CEO Félix Prieto, MPS quote requests for this type of combined press have increased due to a higher demand for shrink sleeves and growing interest for smaller production runs. “MPS has specialised in this segment in recent years by designing very complex machines with a much higher number of printing units, resulting in more finishing options than has traditionally been provided by rotary presses, ” said Prieto.

"Getting Color Right Before It Goes Wrong" by Nick Bazarian, Portfolio Manager, Pantone Digital
Color is often the most critical design element for influencing purchasing decisions with consumers. In this talk, Pantone’s Nick Bazarian will discuss and demo a series of tools and applications that give designers and pre-media a new level of insight into the “achievability” of a given color in the earliest stages of the design process. These new tools facilitate easier communication and more realistic expectations between designers and printers/converters, reducing rework, time and cost for everyone.

"What’s New in Standards and Why Should You Care?" by Ray Cheydleur, Printing and Imaging Product Portfolio Manager
In his role as CGATS Chairman and Chairman of TAG, the primary standards body governing the graphic arts industry, Ray is intimately involved in bringing standards to market, and keeping them updated. In this session, he will cover color standards recently accredited in 2017, including a discussion of where these standards are being implemented and when. He will also discuss the importance of staying current with standards development, where certification is important and how to get certified by various organizations, and answer questions from the audience on this somewhat complex topic.

Brunch with the Standards Gurus will be held on Tuesday where Ray Cheydleur will be participating in a lively panel discussion with other industry experts discussing the importance and impact of current and emerging standards.

World’s largest T-shirt made from plastic bottles by Plast India Foundation

The world’s largest T-shirt has been fashioned out of two lakh plastic bottles collected by NGOs from across the city. The T-shirt measuring 97.5 metres in height and 70.08 in width and made using recycled plastic waste polyethylene terephthalate bottles has created a Guinness World Record.

Plastindia Foundation, the apex body of plastics industry in India, said it took up the initiative to create awareness of the need to manage plastics waste and recycle them more efficiently. It said it wanted to achieve sustainability through the optimal use of plastic waste. The fabric from the T-shirt will be later used to create 10,000 T-shirts and will be distributed to children from the weaker sections of society.

To mark the achievement, the Plastindia Foundation team hosted a press conference on 5 January 2017, at the Goregaon Sports Club in Mumbai.

On the occasion K.K. Seksaria, president, Plastindia Foundation, said, “It was a four-month-long process, which included making the yarn, and stitching the T-shirt. Thousands of people were involved from all over India and mainly from Mumbai because the project was being executed here. We have taken up this exercise to deliver this message to people, in a manner that it is etched in their minds. We have made the world’s largest T-shirt out of used plastic bottles within Mumbai. We want to show to the masses that whenever you see any plastic material or plastic article, they should not consider it as a waste material but a raw material of sorts.”

Addressing the press conference, Atul Kanuga, chairman of the environment and plastic image committee, Plastindia Foundation, said, “We cannot manage our day-to-day life without the use of plastics. Right from toothpastes to telephones and laptops, we ourselves are wearing plastic. Today, jeans are no more cotton, but made out of polyester.”

Mr. Seksaria added that the aim was to show that every plastic material can be a useful resource and it does not necessarily have to harm the environment if it is used in a responsible and sustainable manner. “Plastic is not bad and this has been proven today,” said Vimal Kedia, managing director, Manjushree Technopack Limited.

“The challenge before us is the disposal of plastic. We are proud to say that India is one of the largest recyclers of plastic bottles and other plastics. This initiative is a big step towards educating people that articles can be made out of used plastics, they can be reused and recycled,” Atul Kanuga added.

Clean Label 2.0

Today's consumers are more informed than ever; however, brands are in real danger of being rejected if consumers feel overloaded with information, leading to the questioning of provenance, authenticity, and transparency. The 'essentialist' design principle bridges the divide between not enough and just enough of what's essential for consumers to make an enlightened and confident purchasing decision. Brands must bring the next generation of clean label to packaging design to provide a moment of calm and clarity for shoppers in an increasingly hectic retail environment.

Sea Change
Plastic packaging adrift in the world's oceans will become the catalyst driving brands to rethink packaging in a context consumers can understand and act upon. Concerns over safe packaging disposal will increasingly color consumers' perceptions of different packaging types, and impact shopper purchase decisions. Only by communicating that a brand is working toward a solution will this growing barrier to purchase be overcome. While collecting waste plastic from the sea to recycle into new packaging can raise consumer awareness, it won't solve the problem. In order to keep plastic out of the sea, a renewed effort toward the circular economy is needed to keep packaging material in use.

rEnavigate
Brands will look to contemporary packaging formats to help reinvigorate the center-of-store aisles less visited by younger consumers. Young shoppers are increasingly 'shopping the periphery,' visiting the fresh and chilled aisles around the store perimeter and turning their backs on processed, ambient, and frozen offerings in the center of the store. The use of transparent materials, contemporary design, recyclability, or unique shapes can help draw in younger consumers to the store center, making it as appealing as the burgeoning perimeter to younger consumers.
